Job Lesson 03: God, Satan and Job

God

·       Shows His sovereignty through the knowledge of and His power over His creation. Chs 38-41; Rom 1:19-20 

·       Determines who can be called perfect and upright.

·       God values character above substance (2:3)

·       God must receive glory through all things: Re 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. Ro 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen

·       God will not always reveal why to one who asks. Isa 55:8-9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

·       God has a purpose in what He does that will be always be accomplished Isa 55:11; Jas 5:11 the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

Satan & God

·       The sons of God in the O.T. are angels, created being. Satan is one of those created being.

·       Satan focuses his attacks upon God’s people: Zec 3:1 ¶ And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him 1Pe 5:8 ¶ Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Re 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

·       Satan is powerful

Ø    Can control ungodly nations to use them to kill, and attack men. (Job 1:15, 17)

Ø    Can use nature to do his bidding (Job 1:16, 19)

Ø    Can bring sickness upon a person (Job 2:7)

·       Job 1:11, 2:5 Satan wants God to be blamed for his desire to destroy the perfect and upright man.

·       Job 2:3 Do not read into this verse that Satan could force God to do his bidding. Satan was tempting the LORD to do evil. Mat 4:7, Lk 4:12; Deu 5:16; James 1:13-14

·       The Lord is God equally of Satan and Job.

·       Satan can only go as far as God allows him.

Job

·       2:3 Without Cause: Job did nothing wrong that caused God to allow Satan to attack him.

·       Satan plan for Job: destroy Job’s testimony in the world (1:11.2:5) by getting him to curse God.

·       God’s purpose through Job’s suffering and restoration: that LORD be seen as very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

·       Job knew the LORD was to receive honor in all circumstances Job 1:21

·       Ps 71:11-17 What was David’s response when he was in a seemingly hopeless situation – praised Him more and more.

·       1:20-21; 2:10 even after he had lost his children and substance Job did not foolishly speak against the LORD nor did he sin with his lips.

·       Job knew the LORD built his house. (PS 127:1)

·       1Thes 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

·       Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
