Job Lesson 04: Mrs. Job

What type of wife do you think the Job mentioned in 1:1 would have had? Prov 31:10-31 Describes virtuous wife.

Mrs Job

Mrs. Job: 2:9 Then said his wife unto him,

·       Dost thou still retain thine integrity?

Ø    Job 27:5

Ø    Job’s integrity: 1:1; 2:10b; 1:22 fearing God, avoiding evil, not charging God foolishly.

·       Curse God, and die. Cursing God is blasphemy. The penalty for blaspheming God was death. Ex 20:20, Lev 24:16.

·       I have commentators who have called her faithless, whimpering, wicked, one doing Satan’s bidding, full of wrath, ect.

Ø    She is likened to Eve who was used by Satan to cause Adam to sin.

Ø    My problem with condemning Mrs. Job is that God is silent on this matter. God was not silent on the sin of Mrs. Adam.

·       The only commentary on her in the Bible is Job’s answer in 2:10. “Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh.” It appears to me her foolish talk took Job by surprise because his wife was not one of the foolish women.

·       Her emotions overpowered her wisdom.

·       Note: she did not speak against loosing her children or substance and she did not take the LORD to task.

·       Could it be that Mrs. Job felt Job had suffered enough and she felt if he cursed God, God would kill him at once putting an end to his suffering?

·       This could be understood as telling Job to commit suicide.

Question, why did Satan not kill Mrs Job?

·       Some believe Satan chose not to kill her so her could use her.

·       Consider Gen 2:24, 5:2; Mark 10:6-8; Eph 5:13 Job and his wife were one flesh. Their name was Job; Satan was not allowed to kill Job. It was Job’s body that was covered with painful boils, but his wife suffered right along him. Mrs. Job suffered the same loss as Job.
