Prov 17:5, 15-17

In Chapters 5 & 6 Eliphaz, speaking for the other two men, implied that Job was:

·       4:5 hypocritical

·       4:10-11 a once roaring lion that had lost his teeth

·       5:2 A silly man of wrath and envy

·       5:3 Foolish man that brought about the loss of his substance and brought about the death of his childrens.

·       5:12 a man of crafty devices

·       5:17 a man chastened By God

·       5:24c sinning and needed to stop

This is what Eliphaz spoke against the man God called perfect, one that feared God and eschewed evil.

Chapter 6 & 7 Job’s response to Eliphaz Part 1

6:1-7 Job feels his friends did not understand or even consider his suffering and lack of grief over his “sin”. Eliphaz, proved their concept with what was going on in Job’s life was out of balance with the truth.

·       V3 “Sand of the sea” is seen in 10 verses of the Bible. Meaning an amount so large it can not be counted or imagined (by man) (Jere 33:22) . If Eliphaz had a balanced attitude he would see that the weight of Job’s calamity was greater than he could ever imagine.

·       Job’s words were swallowed up in his grief. There were no words Job could speak that would explain how he feltor give him comfort.

·       V4 when poisoned arrows were used if the arrow itself didn’t kill the poison would bring about a slow, suffering death.

Ø    There was no comfort in the words of Eliphaz they only added to his spiritual suffering (7:11,14)

·       V5, 6 Job four questions that should be answered with No.

Ø    Job was once like animals that had nothing to complain about or he was never forced to eat unsavoury food.

·       V7 Job was never spoken to before as Eliphaz spoke to him in Ch 4&5. His words were as sorrowful or spoiled food that Job would have never had to touch before and were sickening to his soul: the poison arrows.

6:8-13 (8-10a) Job’s plea was for God to take his life knowing that he would go to a place without suffering (3:13, 17-18). What hope is there in living when death would end suffering?

·       V10c  I have not concealed the words of the Holy One. In 3:26 Job said he had not been quiet. Openly praised the LORD. Job wanted everyone to know of the words of the Holy One. What words? God must have revealed truth and knowledge to Job.

Ø    Job not only spoke the word of God but he also shewed them in is life.

Ø    God spoke to Moses face to face (Ex 33:11; 34:10). Jesus spoke directly to Paul. He spoke to Job out of a whirlwind in 38:1.

Ø    Paul declared in acts the same thing. (Acts 20:20, 27).

Ø    10b if Job knew God was going to take his life than the he could find strength the withstand the sorrows until death came. (Did Job believe if death came to him it would be a actually be a reward for his past “perfect’ life?)

·       V11 Job was a broken man physically. He was no longer able to trust in his strength to keep him going.

·       12-13. Stones and brass on their own can withstand great forces, but Job felt he was not physically strong enough on his own to face another day. He had no wisdom left to rely on that would bring comfort.  

·       13a with V14, 15a Is not my help in me?

Ø    Job’s body failed him, his friend had deserted and attacked him, now his only comport and support was what he knew about himself and that what Eliphaz implied about him were lies Job 13:15; 27:5-6

Ø    Eliphaz failed as a comforter. What he implied about Job were all lies.  Lies and deceit are devices used by Satan against the LORD man.

Not indwelled with the Holy Spirit does not mean that the Holy Spirit was not nigh unto the Old Testament saints.

·       Ps 145:18

Eph 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
