Lesson 17 Job responds to Bildad in Chapters 9 & 10. Part 1
Chapter 10:1-2 Speaks of the conflict and confusion within Job. In V15 Job states, “I am full of confusion.” In Vs18-20 Job states again his desire to die. He believes he is living in the dark shadow of death.
In V2 Job said, “I will say unto God”; Is he speaking to God or the the three men? Under what conditions would Job say these things to God?
Chapter 10 can be taken out of context if not studied in light of chapter 9 and both in light of Chapter 3 where Job expressed his desire that God alow him to die and end his misery.
V9:2- Job stated the truth is that no man is just before God.
V9:3, 4b, Job stated this truth: if you try to justify yourself before or contend with God a thousand times you will not win one time!
Contending with God is disagreeing with God. It is useless to harden yourself (stand strong against God’s word to justify your self) against God.
· Rom 9:20 with Isa 45:9-10
· In V12 Job felt he had no right to ask God, “what are you doing.” He knew if God wanted him to know what God was doing He would have told him Isa 45:9-10
Vs 9:4a-10 Job told Bildad V2 is true because of whom God is.
9:10-11 Job knew of the great wonders of God.
· We cannot see God working but we do see the outcome of His actions.
V9:13a Job knew the only way one can stand before God is if God first withdraws His anger
· This is why David prayed, “O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: . . . ‘ in Ps 6:1-2
· Ps 130:3; 143:2
· Heb 10:30-31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
· 130:4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. Ps 3:8; 37:38-39 God must be feared because the way salvation comes to an individual has always been dictated by God.
· Our salvation came when we humbled ourselves and obeyed the gospel and God withdrew His wrath and replaced it with His grace and righteousness through Jesus Christ
V9:13b proud helpers do stoop under him: Those who believe God needs their help and attempt on their own to hasten God’s plan for the ages. (There has always been those who believe they are to prepare this earth for the Lord’s return by destroying the wicked.) See Mat 11:12
· Could Job be warning his friends about their pride; helping God judge Job.
V9:14-15 Job knew if God questioned him would have no answer and it was useless to try to reason with Him (V12)
· Job did not claim to be righteous. Job knew he was not righteousness on his own (In 1:1 God did not call Job righteous because Rom 3:10-11). But if he was he knew he still could not answer (or contend with) God.
· But he would make supplication to his judge (intreat Him to withdraw His anger V13 show him favor.) “My” judge: God was Job’s judge not men.
V16 IF: Job had not called out to God, If had called out to him (made supplication) and God answered it would be hard to believe that God would be moved.
· Ps 8:4, Job 7:17 the question is why would God hearken unto mans’ prayer?
V17-21 The “for” that starts V17 is the reason for Job finding it hard believe that God would hear and respond if Job made supplications to Him
· V17-18 Job troubles came upon him as an unexpected storm, he was broken, his suffering kept getting worse. He was not allowed to even take a breath without being bitter toward his life. Job knew all this came upon him without cause (2:3) Note the “he’s” speaking of God. Job felt that God by not allowing him to die increased his suffering and bitterness toward living.
· V20-21 Job knew on his own he was not perfect on his own.
Job knew he did not deserve to stand before the Most Holy God.
V22-24 Remember Job’s response to his wife in V2:10.
· Ungodly men laugh when a godly man suffers. The health, wealth and happiness gospel brings this about.
· 9:24 with Eph 2:2 God has given this world over to the wicked and the judges have become blind.
· I wonder if the three friends were laughing on the inside over Job’s troubles. (Job 4:5 But now it is come upon thee). Were they judges that were blind to the truth about Job?
