Job Chapter 19 Part 1

Read Job 19:21-22 These verses are key in understanding Job’s increasingly hard attitude toward his friends that led his hardening attitude toward God.

Add verses 19:2-3 and it is clear Job felt his friends came to vex his soul instead of having pity upon him and comforting him.

19:4 Job knew he and no one else would be held accountable “If” he had committed some unknown sin.

19:5 Job accused them of magnifying themselves against him.

·       Remember 17:5 speaking flattery. The Pharisee in Luke 18:11 is an example of speaking flattery: to impressed himself to himself in the eyes of others.

V6 “that God hath overthrown me”. Job was answerable to God not these men. (Job 21:4) Job knew God had given him over to the ungodly and placed him in the hand of the "wicked".

19:7 Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.

·       The wrong of the accusations of his friends

·       V7 with Vs 6 & 8 it seems Job was doing what Eliphaz stated in V15:13: blaming God for unjustly turning him over to the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 89:14 - Is judgment always handing out punishment for doing wrong? NO. Judgment is also a determination, chosen act, opinion.

·        (Job 40:8 with Jer 29:11) What ever God doses or what ever God allows to happen is just. His judgment is always best.

·       Job will learn it was best for him that God turned him over to the ungodly and placed him in the hand of the wicked than if Job had never suffered.

Vs 19:8-20b Job tells what God brought upon him by placing him in the hands of the wicked.

·       V19:8 with V3:23 By not allowing him to die Job felt God had hedged him in a hopeless life (V10b) of sufferin.

·       In V18:19 and 21 Bildad stated the house of the wicked would be empty of sons and nephews. In V19:10 Job’s hope was like dead tree Job’s hope for the future was rooted in his children. (17:16 )  

In V19:22 Job knew God allowed the “wicked” to attack him (19:6 See 16:11) God knew what Satan would do and determined

19:22 Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

·       V22a In V13:7 Job accused them of speaking wickedly and deceitfully for God, 22a he accuses them of acting as if they were representing God by persecuting him instead of showing pity.

·       22b with 11:5-6 They felt God had punished Job only half of what he deserved. (19:2 more than just physical).  These men thought of God’s judgment was only handing out punishment for some wicked sin.

Question: Do we truly by faith believe Rom 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” ?

      Do we truly believe 1Cor 10:13 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”?
