Lesson 34 Bob Chapter 27

In chapter 26 Job spoke of some of the ways of God. He taught that there is much more about God and His creation than man can see or ever know. 27:1 Job continued his parable: his discourse.

V2 Job’s turned from concentrating on God in Ch 26 to making himself the center of the conversation.

Chapter 27:2-6 Job once again maintained his innocents;

V2a “As God liveth” : Job’s way of expressing how true and sincere he was in his claim that he was innocent.

V2b His judgment was that he was innocent of the accusation of the three men and no one has or will change his mind.

V2c The Almighty had vexed his soul; it was between God and Job and not Job and his three friends.

V3-4   Job stated as long as he lived he would not speak wickedly or deceitfully.

·       In V2:10 the Holy Spirit had this statement written about Job, “in all this did not Job sin with his lips”.

V5b-6 that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.

·       If Job would seek to silence those men by agreeing with them and confess to a sin he had not committed he would be speaking wickedness (lying) and would be a hypocrite (V27:8 with 13:16)

V5a “God forbid” as with “as God liveth” Job felt if he spoke wickedly and deceitfully or hypocritically he would acting contrary to his walk with God. He wanted those men to know pleasing God more important to him then pleasing them.

·       V6 “My righteousness”, Job held fast to his heartfelt righteousness.

·       We must understand there is a difference between earthly righteousness and heavenly righteousness.

·       Compared to other men Job was more righteous, but he had no Godly righteousness on his own.

·       I can not help but to believe that Job had begun believe that his righteousness and heavenly righteousness were the same.

Question: Can we Christians make the same mistake? Do we forget that it is God’s righteousness that will allow us to stand before Him justified? (2Cor 5:21: In Him!!)

In Chapter 26 Job said this is God, in 27:2-6 Job said this is me. Did Job want his friends to believe that he and God had come together in judgment? 

The rest of Chapter 27 Job seems to concentrate on what he believes he is not.

27:7-10 God’s deaf ear to those who turn away from Him

·       V7 What else would his three friends understand that Job meant by these worlds that Job felt they were wicked and unrighteous and had raised up together against him

·       V8 with Mat 10:28; Lk 12:20 Job spoke the same thing as Jesus.  

·       Vs9-10 with Job 21:14-15, 22:17 During Old Testament men who did not delight themselves in the Almighty and turned their heart from God had little hope of Him ever extending His grace to them.

V11-12 Job seems to claim to be speaking as God led him to speak. He was not going to hold anything back. Job accuses them of speaking vanity (nothing true or important about him) in spite of the fact that they have experienced that all Job said about the wicked, the hypocrite, and about himself was true.

In 13-23 Job again declared the portion the wicked will receive of God.

·       Zech 7:11-13 with Rom 1:25,32

·       Notice that what Job said will come upon the wicked closely mimics what happened to him in Chs 1 and 2 and what the three men claimed had come upon Job because some sin Job had committed.

Job made this statement in his defense, claiming what came upon him was without cause (9:17). We will see in Chapters 29,30, and 31 Job claimed that he was too righteous and none of this should have happened to him.

But I wonder if his three friends and the young man Elihu thought Job just describes what happened to himself so he must be the wicked hypocrite they declared him to be.

In Chapter 26 Job said this is God, in 27:2-6 Job said this is me, could he be saying in 27:7-23 this is you, my friends?
